New Bark Town- Part 1

Hi. My name is Katie. Nineteen and finally ready to begin my pokemon adventure. Most kids start at the age of ten, but my mom was always a bit over protective of me. she didn't believe I was ready, and so, I stayed behind while all my peers grew up and went on their adventures. I felt lonesome, and like a bit of an outcast. Still now was my time to begin my own story.

I woke up around 11:20 in the morning and dressed quickly. I can't believe I was so late for waking up on such an important day. I had to hurry to Professor Elm's lab. I stumbled down stairs where I was met by my mother. I didn't have a father to speak of. Sure I had one, but I'd never met him, he left my mom a long time ago.

Mom smiled at me as handed me a sandwich, which I quickly stuffed into my mouth, letting her speak. "Hi, Katie. You're finally awake. Ethan was just here a little while ago. He was playing hide-and-seek with Bobble." she said happily. I smiled at her as she continued.

"Oh, I almost forgot! Professor Elm was looking for you too." I frowned and nodded, "I know I know, I'm late." Mom shook her head, "I'm going to miss you..." she said softly. I hugged her tight and kissed her cheek, "I won't disappear forever." She laughed and nodded before handing me the things I needed for my trip before I finished my sandwich and ran off to Professor Elm's lab.

I was so rushed to get there I barely noticed the young man outside of the lab. Nor did I have the time to worry over whether he was being suspicious or just curious. I suppose I should've watched more carefully. He'd have a much more important role in my life than I ever could've imagined.

I barged into the door and quickly stumbled towards Elm who chuckled softly at a grown woman's eagerness to get a Pokemon for the first time.

"Hi, Katie. I've been waiting for you," he said calmly. I sighed and nodded, "I'm sorry I slept in so late." He grinned and waved his hand, "Never mind that. You know about my research. As you know, Pokemon are carried in Poke Balls these days. But before the Poke Ball was invented, people used to walk with Pokemon. Just like your friend Ethan does."

I smiled and nodded, "Yeah I remember those lessons from school." He nodded in returned, "Poke Balls are great because you can carry many Pokemon. But walking with Pokemon must have some advantages. It could have something to with how Pokemon grow or evolve..."

I blinked a bit curious, "You think so?"

"I do," He stated simply, "So, I'm going to give you a Pokemon." I couldn't help but laugh, "Wasn't that your plan from the start?" Elm gave me a faint smile, but his look also told me to be quiet and let the man speak.

"You can walk beside this Pokemon, outside of its Poke Ball, to see if this brings any special feelings or bonds between Pokemon and people. The device over there has some Pokemon you could choose from," he said as he waved towards the machine to his left. He was about to let me go choose my partner before his computer dinged at him and caught his attention.

"Oh, I have an email," he said softly. He moved to his computer and tacked away at a few keys, opening the message and took his time to read it while I mentally sat on my hands dying to move to the machine. He finally turned to me, "Katie, listen."

I brought my attention back to him with a quick blink, "I have this acquaintance that people call Mr. Pokemon. He keeps finding weird things and raving about his discoveries." He sighed pinching the bridge of his nose, "Anyway, I just got an email from him saying that this time it's real. It's probably another Pokemon Egg, but we're still so busy with our Pokemon research. I was wondering if you could go in our place."

I was a bit shocked to be honest, him putting this much faith in me? I smiled proudly. Yeah Elm was a goof ball, but he had been there when my father was not.... which was always. I nodded happily, "Of course I'll go." He smiled happily and waved again to the machine, "You can choose one of the Pokemon over there.

I smiled and finally moved to the machine, booting it up and watching the screen as the image of a Pokemon appeared upon it. The first image was of a Chikorita, definitely not the one for me. I clicked the button that made the balls rotate to the right, and watched the image of a Totodile appear. Definitely a good Pokemon, but still not the one I felt a connection with. I hit the button again and watched the last image appear of a small fiery little Pokemon, Cyndaquil. It was so small and helpless looking, but it had so much potential.

This was it... this was the Pokemon I would become partners with for life. A fire type...Cyndaquil. I pressed the button that would lift the glass case from the Poke balls and reached out, terrified and excited all at once. I let my fingers wrap slowly around the ball and pulled it close to me. Elm smiled, "Is this the Pokemon you want?" I nodded staring at the ball which now wiggled in my grasp. He nodded, then release it and let it see its new trainer.

I looked up at him for a moment then back at the ball pressing the small button that would release it from its ball. Then it was there standing at my feet. Elm laughed as we stared at each other, "Want to name it?" He asked. I nodded a bit blankly before I took a moment to think of a good name for him.

"I'm going to call him Streak..." I said softly. Elm tilted his head curiously. I smiled over at him as I picked Streak up, "Like a streak of flame. One day that's what he'll be... a speeding streak of fire across the battle field." I said as I pet the Cyndaquil gently. Elm smiled and nodded, "Fitting. Oh.. and Katie.."

"Hm?" I asked as I turned to him, "Tell your mother where you're going before you go. She'll worry if you don't." I smiled and nodded, "Okay, I will." As I headed out of the lab I was stopped by one of the assistance, Zach. I smiled at him, I liked nerds, they were always so cute, "What's up Zachy?" He laughed faintly before handing me a small bag of potions, "Your Pokemon could get injured or even die out there.. you have to keep him safe, okay?" I frowned at his serious tone but nodded. "Alright, don't worry I'll take care of him." Zach nodded and finally let me go to return to my house and tell mom about my little task.

I walked through my front door and hardly had a chance to let Streak in before my mother jumped on us. "Oh! Katie! That's a cute Pokemon you have." Both Streak and I frowned, we didn't really see him as 'cute', but more as a soon to be threatening beast. I sighed as she picked him up and cuddled him, "Professor Elm was so kind for giving him to you."

I nodded but then explained what Elm wanted me to do before I could begin my journey. She frowned softly, "I see... With such a young Pokemon, it could be difficult. But when someone like Professor Elm makes that kind of request of you, its only right to do as you've promised." She put Streak down before perking up, "Oh, that's right! I completely forgot! Your Pokegear came back from the repair shop. Here you go," She said as she handed me my Pokegear. I smiled and thanked her for it before bidding my good by once more, kissing her forehead before leaving to go complete my assigned task.

Before I could even get out of town though, Professor Elm ran out of his door and stopped me. "Katie, I forgot, here take my number. If anything happens out there, call me okay?" I smiled at him, he wasn't my father, but he was more of a dad than I could ever hope for. I nodded happily, "I promise." With that we exchanged a respectful nod and I departed.
